Do you feel lucky?

If so, you might want to try your hand at blackjack. This classic casino game offers plenty of excitement and the potential for big payouts. But before you risk your hard-earned cash, it’s important to learn the rules of blackjack

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the basics of blackjack and teach you how to play like a pro.

The Object

The object of blackjack is simple: to beat the dealer’s hand. Players do this by either having a hand total that is higher than the dealer’s hand total, or by having a hand that totals 21 (known as blackjack). If the player’s hand exceeds 21, they ‘bust’ and automatically lose the game.

The Deck

Blackjack is typically played with a standard 52-card deck. However, some casinos may use multiple decks (or even continuous shuffling machines) in order to discourage card counting.

The game begins with each player placing a bet. Once all bets are made, the dealer will deal two cards to each player and two cards to themselves. One of the dealer’s cards will be face up, while the other remains face down.

The Cards

All face cards (kings, queens and jacks) are worth 10 points. Aces can be worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on what is most advantageous for the player. All other cards are worth their numeric value.

The Action

Once the cards are dealt, play begins with the player to the dealer’s left. That player has a few different options:

  • Stand: If you like your hand, you can ‘stand’ and keep your cards.
  • Hit: If you want to receive another card, you ‘hit’.
  • Double down: This option allows you to double your bet in exchange for receiving one additional card.
  • Split: If you’re dealt two cards of the same value, you can ‘split’ them into two separate hands.
  • Surrender: Some casinos offer the option to ‘surrender’, which means you give up half of your bet and end your turn.

Once the player has taken their action, play passes to the dealer. The dealer then hits or stands according to a set set of rules known as the ‘house edge’.

The Outcome

If the player’s hand total is closer to 21 than the dealer’s, the player wins and is paid out at 1:1 odds. If the player has blackjack (a hand totaling 21), they win at 3:2 odds. If the player busts, they automatically lose.

There are a few other possible outcomes, which we won’t go into here. But those are the basics of blackjack. Now that you know how to play, why not try your luck at a real money online casino?

Happy gambling!
